Food for Thought

Our focus this year is Hauroa - Wellbeing.  So every term, we would improve and work on our skills with each wellbeing, and this term we are working on Mental Health or Taha Hinengaro. So we've been taught with lessons and studying how our diet should truly be for us.

The first lesson: It was last week, and we had learnt new facts. First we did an introduction with Elizabeth. We talked about food and what vitamins they have and the effects they have on our body. We also talked about food that were really bad for you and is best to eat occasionally or sometimes. After that talk, we got to be in groups of four. What we had to do was arrange random food in this big zip-lock bag and segregate them into certain groups.

Second lesson: After the last lesson, we had another one the next day or so, the second lesson. This time we talked about the nutrition information you find in every man-made product. We discussed how much energy and things like that there should be in food. An example is that Sugar should be below 10 grams for us kids. Next, we had a task to do. It was to, like last time, to segregate them but this time, with the amount of sweetness in certain drinks, in groups of four again. No-body got all of them correct and some drinks had a big amount of sugar, especially with small drinks.

The Supermarket trip:

Those last two lessons were pretty fun but this was epic. All of the seniors, class by class were going for about a 10-minute drive to the supermarket. Hauraki was second, my class. The first thing we did was once we came to the supermarket was have the rules explained to us. We each given a paper activity, no wonder why we had to bring our pens. We got with our adults we were going with. We explored all around the market to look for the isle which had the category we were looking for.

Then we would write down the nutrition information and transfer it on the paper. We had to pick two items: a 'sometimes' food and a healthier item. We did it all the way from Carbohydrates to Dairy Products. After all that had finished, we had received free lunch boxes with notes of this learning experience and the teacher got a $60 gift card to make a healthy lunch.

So please make sure that your diet is a healthy and suitable one!

Beach Clean

At the very last day of the term, instead of attending to the Climate Change like last time, our options were different, and it was a beach clean at our very own local beach,
Waikowhai Bay. It was just the senior block attending this walk. We had to be resourceful and re-used the same signs we used in the last march. Then partnered up with the same person we were with to make those signs. As we walked outside school, we stopped and stood outside the school fence to show our signs to those who were passing by, whether the sidewalk or the cars and took photos to keep remember this little trip. After that, we just started walking again. I still holding my sign up with some ''shifts'' with my buddy, also a friend, Jia. It was longer than I thought, but I liked doing this walk, because it was not using any fuel other then my own body and legs. After that, we passed by the beach and sat on the concrete floor for a rest, waiting for instructions form the teachers.

When the teachers said the instructions, we got into groups of three, and joined into another group of 3 to make a six. Then, the teachers arranged us with an adult, who were kind enough to help. After all that grouping stuff, all groups splits off as we were headed onto the surface of the beach. We walked a little until we were in the area we were assigned to go to.  I got to be with my friends, Neeve, Zoe, Jia, Ama, Chimay and two other boys. Surprisingly, the first thing I found was a pieces of wine glass, and there were alot of those.

By the way, please do not litter wine glass, or anything else.

Another shocking thing I learnt during the trip was that there were a huge amount of broken wine glass and whole bottles. We stayed there for pretty much the whole afternoon, the gather in the same place we were before.

All I can say for this experience is it was an enjoyable one and please try your best to help the marine animals.
